Free Nautical Fiction on the Internet Doesn't Cost You a Single Doubloon

by Michelle Denney

Can't get enough wind, waves and warfare? Now some of the great nautical classics are available on the Internet for free!

Named for the inventor of movable type, Project Gutenberg is a web site dedicated to bringing great literature into our homes free of charge. Since Project Gutenberg electronically publishes only those texts whose copyright has expired, the books are in the public domain. Using volunteers who scan existing copies of the books, Project Gutenberg then posts these texts on the Internet. While there may be some errors in punctuation or some typos, one can hardly argue with the price.

We have created a list of some of the nautical fiction available at Project Gutenberg. Browse through the titles to get an idea of something you may be interested in buying or checking out at the library, or read the whole novel without having to leave your computer! There are compressed forms of the text available if you would like to download a .zip file, but the links we have provided will take you directly to a file you can read with any word processor.

There are thousands of other titles available free from Project Gutenberg. If you would like to view the main Project Gutenberg page or search for other titles go to
